Ok i survived last night but i am not sure how much i can take. We took Hunter's bottle away cold turkey. We found out that he had an ear infection and the bottle only would make things worse if we put him to bed with it. So I very regrettably took it away and now i have a MONSTER! He jump/ flipped out of his crib 3 times is 2 minutes( which he had never done before), screamed bloody murder for 3 hours straight and throws him self on the floor so hard i am not sure of a place he is not bleeding or brused. I lowered the crib mattress all the way to the flood so he could not jump out any more so he is no longer throwing him self into sharp corners. I tried holding him to give him comfort but he just kicks and hits to the point where i am having horrible contractions. I am a total reck. I have not slept and my child will not eat or drink anything which has made his blood sugar low giving him an ever worse attitude. I need advice! Please let me know what i should do...How long does this last and will i survive it? Any comments would be helpful at this point...
Oh and to make matters worse he has bronchitis, the ear infection, had to get blood drawn yesterday for possible low palatet levels resulting in broken vessels all over his face, fever, and cutting threw 4 molars! Oh yah you wish you had my life right...

You should NEVER try to get him off the bottle while he is sick. I know you want him off cause of the ear infection, but whether its a bottle of a cup he will still have the sucking motion. Think about when a 6 month old gets a bottle, they cant just switch to a cup. The best way we got Regen off a bottle was slowly. We would give her a cup all day and at naptime. I would put only water in the bottle and something sweet in the cup. After a while she wanted the cup. Also get the cups that have a soft tip its an easier transition. When he is use to the cup then go to the hard tip. There is no sense in putting your body in danger and your son over a bottle. Just give it to him.
Ummmm - Well, for one thing, I would not take the bottle away just now. He is incredibly miserable already, and needs the comfort of his bottle. If he's got meds, his infection will not get worse. Will he take anything in the bottle besides milk? Or maybe dilute the milk if you're super-worried, and if he doesn't care. For the moment, ANYthing he needs to feel more comfortable is what he should get. Has your doctor taught you how to alternate Tylenol and Motrin? This might be useful to control his fever and work on the pain. I'll bet his ears are killing him. I'm thinking I would throw myself all over also if I had that list of owies. Call me if you need me!
I'd give him the bottle. Try to wean him off of it after he's feeling better, little at a time. Everyone will be happier. Good luck!
Oh Megan, I wish I could give you the proper advice, but since my kids are not quite the norm it is hard. Cody gave up the bottle by himself the last several months. Yes, he was five years old but mentally he was only approx. 2? When that happened, we just started giving Natalie a sippy cup and she was fine with it. My opinion may not count for much since I can't really follow the same type of guidelines that most parents do, but if he want's the bottle "I would let him have it" especially if he is not feeling well already. You are always going to get opinions and suggestions whether you ask for them or not, just go with your "Mommy" insicts and you will survive. Believe me, I too have wished my life on other's a lot of times. Take it from a Mom of two special needs kids (with very little help) IT DOES GET EASIER!
You poor thing! I really feel for you- as if being miserably pregnant isn't enough :( I go with the "let him keep it for now" notion. When he's feeling better, doing the water in the bottle thing is a great idea. The Nubby cups have soft spouts like the bottle nipples- great for transition... they just tend to leak if the spout gets chewed a lot.
Charla used her bottle until she was almost 3! When I weaned Leora off hers at about 18 months she was also LIVID. She certainly didn't drink as much for a long time, but eventually gave in. We're still weaning Charla (4) off her pacifier. We have her down to pretty much bedtime. Hang in there and relish it when everyone's feeling better!
